I guess most of us use ebay, "that worldwide garage sale". This is a must-see for all ebayers:

| I have been using ebay and paypal for years, both as a buyer and a seller, and never had a significant problem, but I know that some folks are dead against using either.

I've had far more problems with dishonest stamp dealers by post than I've ever had on ebay. One very active dealer sent in a spurious £500 credit card transfer and refused to pay it back till I called the police. That was by post. I've never had a single problem with ebay or paypal in 8 years.

The Mulready blog group [ focused mainly on penny blacks and similar early issues] , with both serious collectors and dealers, is filled with discussions of the misdescribed and even spurious people buying and selling on Ebay. There appear to be some heavy duty crooks working on the unwary.
They also are very caustic about the unwillingness of Ebay to deal with those phonies.
Reading these experiences by experts in their niche, I have decided not to spend any serious money in this venue--or to try to sell there either. It probably works for those of you who are expert in your fields, but it scares one like me who collects in a way that leaves me a master of none.

Hmm. The problem is avoided if you stick to dealers who you know from other venues, or major names.
Yes there are indeed crooks on ebay (I had one sold me some duff car parts...), but I've not found any serious stamp problems.
And you can (nay MUST) consult their star ratings before spending any serious money on them! That's what the stars are for. And I must have spent >£2000 over the past 6 years with ebay stamp dealers with never a problem with any (well, one lost the item after advertising it and refunded me the money..., but I don't count that as serious)

This topic is now "closed". I have trimmed out most of the exchanges. We have to agree to disagree.

On a PS going back to the first post in this i: there are several "Stamp Collecting" videos on Youtube. Some better adverts for the hobby than others...
