Gibbons catalogue says the overprinted GB postage dues were still in use in Southern Rhodesia "as late as April 1963".
In The Overprinter 3/1978 an article says they were still being used in July 1964, finally being withdrawn on 16.6.1965.
In the Overprinter 4/2000 Tony Stanford illustrates one used in 22 March 1961.
Does anybody have later copies (scans/photocopies please)?

Not as such "last known dates" but on cover from GBOS London 2000 "display".
4d Green 20 April 1954
1d Blue 28 June 1958
2d Black 18 October 1958
4d Blue 22 March 1961

From my own "collection" the 4d Green with what looks like a January 1953 date. No dates for any others

On the Deverell & MacGregor Sales Website (www.rhodesia.co.za) are a number of illustrated covers and single stamps. I noted D7 (1/-) on cover 22 Aug 62 Salisbury and also on cover D4 (3d) 27 Aug 61.

They also have 3 or 4 used 4d Green with readable dates for anyone interested in this scarce ovpt. inc a single used 11 Jun 52 at SELUKWE which is much scarcer than the usual Gwelo cds.

I have a local cover franked with 1d Southern Rhodesia definitive cancelled SALISBURY 11 MAR 1965. The cover was redirected to Bulawayo and taxed 6d. A 2d SR postage due was applied and cancelled BULAWAYO 1 MAY 65. In the meantime Salisbury receiving marks dated 23 and 27 April had been applied to the reverse.

This just preceeded the introduction of Rhodesia dues on 17 June 65
and could well be the latest ue of the overprinted SR dues. however
it is not clear to me why the cover was taxed 6d and charged 2d

Tony

A possible reason for your 6d/2d cover maybe that this was the top of a batch of 3 covers to the same address. The total due was 2d but the combined total was 6d. Is the addressee a business by any chance. This is not necessarily what has happened here but was a common practice in the area and I have seen some very high frankings on the "top of the bundle" env from the 50's & 60's.

Also what was the redirection fee for a letter at this date does anyone know? By the sounds of it the fee should not have been more than 1d if original postage was only 1d. Fine would double fee to 2d, which ties in with my suggestion above. Anyone able to say for sure?

Tony - A further thought on your cover. When were Southern Rhodesia stamps invalidated and replaced by Rhodesia & Nyasaland?
